3 Must-See October Movies

Oftentimes the people in my life who haven’t been to the movies in months are the same people who say, “there isn’t anything out that I would want to see”. While movie theaters saw a decline in attendance this summer, this doesn’t mean that there weren’t great films out that were worth seeing. This summer gave us: It Ends With Us, Deadpool and Wolverine, Twisters, and Alien: Romulus.

Whether you have turned your blinders on to the ever changing billboards promoting these movies, or simply don’t know what is on the horizon, here are some of the films coming out this month. Each is highly anticipated, in my book, and can be the movie that gets you back into going to the theater before the year is done!

  1. We Live In Time, releasing Oct. 11

This movie is first on my recommendations because I am so excited for every bit of this movie. With Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh as leads, We Live In Time takes us through a young couple's lives as they meet, start a family, and later handle the hardships of life together. The movie is being produced by A24 and my hunch tells me that it will leave audiences with a similar feeling as Past Lives. Similarly, we will see raw human emotions at their strongest and at the forefront of the film, while love and connection are shown transpiring across our lives. While the two movies seem to be similar, I can’t wait to see We Live In Time to see the full comparison between the two.

  1. Anora, releasing Oct. 18

Anora has been making noise since winning the Palm d’Or in Cannes this year. Much of the hype has been centered around Mikey Madison’s performance. This movie is personally on my list because ever since Madison’s performance as a Manson girl in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, I have been excited to see her in other roles. (And can I just say the amount of budding talent in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood at the time is ridiculous! Margaret Qualley? Sydney Sweeney? Maya Hawke?!) The overall theme is that of a Cinderella story where Madison’s character falls in love with a Russian oligarch's son and they quickly get married without anyone knowing. Once news breaks out, the family wants to stop their son and undo the marriage. Can Anora hold onto this lifeline? Will the family find a way to break them up?

  1. A Real Pain, releasing Nov. 1

This film is Jesse Eisenberg’s second directorial film and in it he stars alongside Kieran Culkin. The pair play cousins set out on a tour of Poland to honor their grandmother. The film travels through their family dynamic and the pair’s relationship against the historical background of Poland and what the country meant to their grandmother. These three movies all have a sense of heaviness in their own unique way. A Real Pain rounds out the trifecta of sadness with the element of reminiscing on a war-torn and Nazi-run Poland. All three films deal with an aspect of family connections, both positive and negative. How are we there for the ones that we love and how do they love us despite our flaws and the difficulties that life throws at us.
