How To Create a Home That Speaks To You

You know that feeling when you’re in a loud, busy restaurant and you can feel your ears drifting to the conversation at the next table over? Is your home decor doing the same thing to your eyes?

Decorating a home can be tough! You want it to represent you and speak to your personal style. But, there is also the nagging feeling of wanting your space to look “trendy” or “styled”. Normally, when we get this feeling with our clothes, there is less pressure because tomorrow is a new outfit and a new opportunity to put your best foot – or shoe – forward. However, with our home’s, it’s harder to get it “right”.

We want our homes to look straight out of Pinterest but how do we get there? Should you try the DIY art project that came across your For You Page? Or is the wall print you found at the flea market going to look as good in your home as it does on the table?

One tip that I have come to learn, and that has brought cohesion into my space and my decor, is to choose what part of your home is going to be speaking to you and your guests. We don’t want to feel like every piece of furniture and art is speaking to us all at once; then we will have that busy restaurant feeling again. When you move into your space, decide who is going to do the talking – your decor or your furniture.

While browsing home furniture sites, I have come across a handful of colorful couches or arm chairs, and thought “I need this … NOW”. But, then I take a step back and I think, “Would a pink couch and an Elton John poster too much?”. In case you are wondering, the answer (for me) is yes!

For my home, I decided I wanted to let my decor do the talking. In my apartment, I have floral art prints and colorful coffee table books, pink bedding and green trinkets, and posters of Harry Styles, Elton John, and Olivia Rodrigo. In your head, I hope you are seeing the color and pizazz.

Now imagine if in the middle of this decor sat a purple, velvet couch. What do you look at first? The beautiful couch or Harry Styles in all his glory? For this reason, my furniture revolves around neutral colors and dark woods. With the wood stain being consistent throughout my furniture, I can mix and match between shades of gray, cream, and brown to keep a stillness amongst the backdrop of my furniture.

It is great to have multiple conversation starting pieces, but if there are too many then you can overwhelm the apartment and dilute each item's individual praise.

So for that reason, I have found that a simple way to elevate your home is by either having effortless furniture paired with decor that speaks to your style or striking furniture paired with decor that is easier on the eyes.
