Make Your Phone Your Friend

Growing up during the summers my sister and I would watch Aquamarine on repeat. We’re talking about rewinding our favorite parts, restarting it as soon as it finished, and quoting every line - we were obsessed with this movie. To this day, my favorite part of the movie is Aquamarine’s outfit, from the blue highlights to most importantly her Starfish earrings. Who could forget the iconic line, “They literally give me compliments in my ear”?

Since I couldn’t get live Starfish to constantly compliment me, I’ve found the next best thing. It comes in the form of an app that sends me push notifications throughout the day with daily affirmations.

I originally found the app through Bella Hadid’s 2022 Vogue cover interview. During her interview, Rob Haskell mentioned how her phone kept buzzing throughout their time together. While it would have been plausible to guess it was any of her A-list friends texting her with an invite to the hottest party, instead it was affirmations. The free app behind the sweet notes is I Am and it has a variety of messages to send out throughout the day for users.

I have had the app on my phone for the last two years and I can say that I still look at the notifications and smile and the feeling has not gotten old. After so much time, they don’t all have the same effect, but there is guaranteed to be at least two a day that make me feel genuinely happier.

Another perk of the app is that it works on airplane mode and is independent of wifi or cell service. On flights I always try to avoid buying wifi so that I can have a few hours without my phone. The few times I have bought wifi on a flight I have managed to spend the entire 5+ hour flight scrolling TikTok and rotting my brain away. However, the times when I don’t have wifi I know when I get a notification it is the I Am app giving me my daily reminders. Getting the reminders no matter what I am doing feels like a friend that can go anywhere with me. Which is kind of what the app is!

Morning affirmations are something I had incorporated in my morning routine a few years ago, but it was easy to let them drop off when I wanted to sleep in or got out of step with my routine. The I Am app is going to send me notifications whether I am having the busiest week of my life or the slowest week of my life. I don’t have to prioritize these reminders for myself and I can get fed them instead.

I have always used the free version that gives me general affirmations, but there is a premium option that allows you to tailor your reminders. If you are looking to hear notes about finding love or being more confident, there are different affirmation mixes that you can choose from. There is also a widget to give you a positive note as soon as you open your homescreen. I Am is constantly there for you to give you positive energy.

In the time it took me to write this piece I have gotten a notification, so I will leave you with what it said and let you consider getting the app for yourself: I am kind to myself.
