My Experience Taking Collagen

Vitamins, and red-lights, and supplements - oh my!

With so many ways to help your nutrition, it’s hard to know what is a fad and what will actually help your overall health. I recently started taking collagen and if you are considering it, here is my experience with adding it into my diet.

Knowing that I already take a handful of vitamins, I didn’t want to add a whole lineup of supplemental drinks. Collagen and probiotics are best in liquid form and while I wanted to incorporate both into my diet, I wanted to find a two-in-one product to cut down on the amount of supplements I was intaking. Since there are multiple on the market, I tried two and found pros and cons to both for you to consider.

The first product I tried was the Garden of Life collagen powder. Between the two products, this one had faster and better results. However, it comes in a smaller package and it worked best when I used two full scoops. The package says that you can choose between one and two scoops and so I found myself using only one scoop to save it and make it last longer. This rationing is what made me decide to look for another option. I was unhappy with how quickly it was running out and figured I should test out another product. While I loved that I felt results within the first week of taking it, I have yet to go back to it.

The second product was the Orgain collagen powder. This product I got at Costco so it is needless to say that the issue with the package sizing was solved with this option. The Orgain powder only requires one scoop. This made it easier to dissolve in my drinks and helped with the overall taste. Even though both options said they were unflavored, collagen has a certain smell and taste that can’t be avoided. The Orgain option didn’t have as noticeable results within the first week that I tried it, but it still gives better results than not taking anything.

Overall, my favorite thing about incorporating collagen into my diet was the gut support. Both products helped to soften my crows’ feet, plump my skin, and diminish my bloating. As opposed to any of the vitamins I have tested, drinking collagen does the most in terms of regulating my gut. The plumpness in your skin is the right amount of glow and softness that makes it look like you found the perfect new step in your skincare routine, and technically you did!

To get the best results, I drink my collagen in the morning on an empty stomach. I dissolve it in hot water and add in honey to help with the taste. When it is available, I also include lemon juice for an extra bit of flavor. Adding this into my morning routine has been a great way to start my day with mindfulness. While I drink the collagen, I start my day on the right foot and can sit at the dining table and take in my drink in a quiet moment before work. Some people do this with their morning coffee, but caffeine on an empty stomach tends to give me anxiety. If you are trying to decrease your caffeine intake and looking for an alternative morning drink, collagen could help with this as well.

If you’re in the market for collagen to add to your diet, check out either of these options. While there are tons on the market, don’t forget that it never hurts to test a few out to find the one that you like and that works best with your body.
